2026 Iowa Voter Guide
What happens in November will decide whether the gun safety progress we’ve fought for survives, or gets dismantled. Over the past year, the Trump administration has gutted ATF, rearmed domestic abusers and violent criminals, and shredded federal gun safety laws — with the MAGA majority in Congress doing nothing to stop them.
The road to returning a gun-sense majority to Congress goes through Iowa, and Moms Demand Action volunteers are going to be the ones to get it done. The Hawkeye State is home to three of the most important battleground House races in the nation: a rematch in the First District that came down to fewer than 800 votes in 2024, an open seat in the Second, and a toss-up in the Third. What do the Democratic candidates in all three districts have in common? They’re all Moms Demand Action volunteers.
A gun safety majority in the House is what stands between the gun lobby and a federal concealed carry mandate that would force every state to honor every other state’s carry standards. It’s the only check available at the federal level on the Trump administration — the oversight and subpoena power to hold it accountable, and the ability to stop further cuts to ATF.
It only takes four seats to flip the U.S. House, and Moms Demand Action volunteers in Iowa can deliver three of them. They had our backs. Now it’s time to have theirs.

1st Congressional District
Christina Bohannan
In 2026, Iowa voters have the opportunity to elect gun sense champion and Moms Demand Action volunteer Christina Bohannan to one of the nation’s most competitive Congressional seats. After coming within fewer than 800 votes of victory in 2024, Bohannan is running again to represent Iowa’s 1st Congressional District. The first in her family to graduate from college, she worked her way through school before becoming an environmental engineer, earning a law degree at the top of her class, and serving as a law professor at the University of Iowa. A longtime advocate for responsible gun ownership and common-sense gun safety, Bohannan fought efforts to gut Iowa’s background check and concealed carry permit laws. She believes expanded background checks and Red Flag laws are critical components of public safety while also consistent with upholding the Second Amendment and supporting responsible gun ownership.

2nd Congressional District
Lindsay James
In 2026, Iowa voters have the opportunity to send another strong gun safety advocate to Congress by electing Lindsay James in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District. As an experienced legislator, educator, chaplain, and mother living in Dubuque, James has made common-sense gun violence prevention a cornerstone of her campaign. Since her election to the Iowa House in 2018, James has served four state House terms, risen to minority whip, and helped establish Iowa’s first bipartisan, bicameral caucus. Her experiences serving families in times of crisis, as well as raising kids of her own, have shaped her commitment to practical solutions that keep Iowa children and communities safe. James is a gun sense champion who knows that no parent should have to fear for their child’s safety when dropping them off at school. She’ll fight to keep weapons out of criminal hands through expanded background checks, Red Flag laws, and an assault weapons ban.

3rd Congressional District
Sarah Trone Garriott
At a time when Iowa has rolled back firearm safety laws, voters can send one of the state’s leading gun violence prevention advocates to Congress by electing Sarah Trone Garriott. Trone Garriott has spent her career serving people in times of crisis. She’s been an AmeriCorps volunteer supporting survivors of domestic violence, a hospital chaplain, a minister, and now an Iowa state Senator. First elected in 2020 after flipping a Republican-held state Senate seat, she narrowly won re-election in 2024, preserving a key Democratic seat in the legislature. A former Moms Demand Action volunteer and Demand a Seat participant, Trone Garriott beat the gun lobby-backed Senate president to win her seat and has become one of Iowa’s foremost voices for gun violence prevention. She supports closing loopholes that allow dangerous individuals to access firearms and funding school safety measures that protect kids without turning classrooms into fortresses.
