Candidate Selection

How we select our Gun Sense Candidates.

Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction

The Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction is a program meant to signal to our ten million supporters, volunteers, and gun safety voters across the country that, if elected, a candidate will govern with gun safety in mind. Those awarded the distinction have demonstrated that they will support stronger gun laws and advocate for safer communities if elected into office.

Multiple candidates in a race can receive the distinction, and just like common-sense gun safety, the distinction is non-partisan.

The Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction is not an endorsement from Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund or its volunteer networks, and it should not be represented as such. Instead, it is a signal to our supporters, volunteers, and voters across the country that a candidate, if elected, will govern with gun safety in mind.

Candidate Questionnaire and Selection Process

The Gun Sense Candidate questionnaire is the foundation for evaluating a candidate’s position on gun violence prevention. A candidate’s record and public positions are also factors in evaluating a candidate’s submitted questionnaire.

The questionnaire asks a candidate their positions on various evidence-based public safety policies shown to reduce gun violence and save lives.

Once questionnaires are submitted, candidates’ questionnaires, records, and public positions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and then candidates will be notified if they are awarded the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.

If you are a candidate seeking the opportunity to submit a Gun Sense Candidate questionnaire, please email gunsensecandidates@everytown.org.
