The Everytown Rule of Law Fund, an initiative of the Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, seeks to elect Attorneys General who will stand up for the rule of law, uphold their oath to the Constitution, and prioritize the safety of our communities.
Why Attorneys General?
Attorneys General serve on the front lines of keeping our communities safe from gun violence and defending the checks and balances that Americans from every political ideology depend on.
They have been steadfast partners when it comes to holding the gun industry accountable, including working with Everytown Law on multiple cases, such as:
- Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown filing a lawsuit to hold Glock accountable for facilitating the proliferation of illegal machine guns.
- Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul working to ensure that an infamous gun manufacturer tied to gun trafficking would not be licensed to sell firearms by re-incorporating under a new name.
- Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez working to defeat a challenge from the gun industry’s trade association to strike down the state’s industry accountability law.
Why Now?
Attorneys General are the tip of the spear in defending our system of checks and balances. When laws are considered optional, public safety is at risk — and that’s why Everytown is making sure Attorneys General know we have their back.
Attorneys General have already been taking action to defend our democracy and our communities:
- Federal Layoffs Impacting Seniors, Veterans, and Schools: 19 Attorneys General sued the Trump Administration for firing thousands of probationary federal workers, disrupting essential services for seniors, veterans and schools. Layoffs at the VA also put at risk key services like the Veterans Crisis Line.
- HHS and Life Saving Research: 22 state Attorneys General sued the Trump Administration to halt cuts to life saving research programs that could leave hospitals struggling to care for their patients, including victims of gun violence and domestic abuse.
- Civil Liberties: 21 state Attorneys General sued the Trump Administration to stop the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education. In addition to the obvious harms to education, the eradication of DOE threatens critical progress in school safety led by the agency.
The good news: We have a winning playbook for electing Attorneys General.
Our Investment In Attorneys General
With a goal of an investment of $10 million, the Everytown Rule of Law Fund will support the work to elect Attorneys General in up to ten key swing states across the 2025 and 2026 election cycle.
Since 2017, Everytown has invested $5 million to elect Attorneys General nationwide. In the 2024 North Carolina Attorney General’s race, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund partnered with the DAGA People’s Lawyer Project, to successfully elect Attorney General Jeff Jackson. In 2022, Everytown invested $500,000 in Michigan to re-elect Attorney General Dana Nessel and $500,000 in Nevada to re-elect Attorney General Aaron Ford.
Most recently, Everytown celebrated the Wisconsin Supreme Court victory of Judge Susan Crawford, who defeated extremist Brad Schimel, marking a significant defeat for the Trump-Musk agenda after Elon Musk attempted to buy the race. Everytown invested nearly $1 million in Wisconsin, including on television, digital ads and a statewide field program.
The victories make clear that we can win tough fights to elect Gun Sense Candidates who will support gun safety and will work to stop the Trump Administration’s dangerous agenda–are you with us?
